Description

Abell 1185 is a galaxy cluster in Ursa Major about 400 million light years away.  It features a number of lenticular galaxies, as well as the interesting NGC 3561, the "Guitar", above and left of center.  NGC 3561, also listed as Arp 105, is a pair of interacting galaxies with an extensive tidal tail between them.  I pushed color saturation a little bit more than I usually do to emphasize the distinct blue in the tidal tail.

Processed entirely in PixInsight with DBE, BlurX correct only, SPCC, BlurX (auto PSF) and NoiseX in linear, then stretched with Generalized Hyperbolic Stretch.  I then separated the stars and processed the galaxies with LHE for contrast enhancement, Curves and Color Saturation.  Stars received only a little more saturation.

This image is tightly cropped to focus on the galaxy cluster.  I find it remarkable that a wide (ish)-field telescope and a modern camera can nevertheless capture details in objects only a few arcminutes across.

Title: Tight Crop

Description: This is a very tight crop of the original image, focused on just the brightest galaxies in the cluster. It represents about 2.5% of the original frame. It's a tribute to modern pixels and a good amateur telescope that this image remains viewable after zooming in 40x.
