Description

I observed this object on 15 September 2015 at the Okie-Tex Star Party using a 12” Skywatcher Dobsonian: Large, bright globular cluster with a very compressed core. Class IV.

I observed this object on 9 September 2023 at the Okie-Tex Star Party using a 22” Obsession UC Dobsonian: Large and bright, M15 concentrates into a small dense core. There is a significant halo. Some stars could be resolved. No colors noted.

I obtained the calibrated light frames used to create the final image from Insight Observatory. The 60 sec frames were imaged by the AFIL-1 Telescope at the Gemini Observatory in Liand, China. The 300 sec frames were imaged by the AFIL-2 Telescope at the Yunling Observatory in Kunming, China.

Note: M15 is the prototype for a core collapse GC. It is 175 LY in diameter. In contains the planetary nebula Pease 1 or K 648.

Shapley Sawyer Classification: IV
Distance: 35,699 LY
Type: Halo Globular
Position w.r.t. core of galaxy: Below the MY disc and about the same distance from the core as the Sun.
Any stars resolved: No
Undergoing Core Collapse: Yes
