Description

This is a very special pair of galaxies that met a few hundred million years ago, producing a very recognizable shape: a (cosmic) rose.Arp 273 are two interacting spiral-shaped galaxies located about 300 million years ago -light from home in the direction of the Andromeda constellation. The larger of the two galaxies, known as UGC 1810, is almost five times as massive as its companion (UGC 1813). The arms of the great galaxy have been stretched by the effects of the gravitational tide caused by their crossing. Thus large tidal tails appear where compressed gases and dust form very hot stars. This galactic dance perpetuated on cosmic time scales ends, depending on the mass of the galaxies and their respective speeds and directions, with the fusion of the galaxies into one.Note that all the stars in the field are part of the Milky Way, while our two protagonists are far from where an angular dimension of only 1.5 ’for a magnitude 13!
