Description

On the evening of October 27, 2022 I was setting up my telescope for a night of shooting out in the Mojave desert. Just after the sun dipped below the horizon I saw what I thought was a jet flying overhead BUT the trail it left was much too large. I realized it was a rocket launch from Vandenburg Airforce Base near Lompoc, California. I didn't know there was a launch scheduled for that day. So I scrambled to get my Canon 5D camera out and started shooting. You could easily see the rocket itself and one of the boosters falling away. About 10 minutes later the cloud that was left behind became incredibly colorful like a nebula. It was a very lucky shot with the mountain and sliver of moon being the icing on the cake. It was then chosen to be Photo of The Day at astronomy.com https://astronomy.com/photos/picture-of-day/2022/11/launch-leftovers
