Description

I observed this object on 3 May 2019 at the Texas Star Party with a 22” Obsession UC Dobsonian: Stunning as usual. Very large and very bright globular cluster. Not very compressed. Brightens moderately towards the core. Class V. Many individual stars are discernible in the halo. Distance is about 25,000 LY. There are three relatively starless lanes that break the cluster into sections. Overall, the cluster appears to be irregularly shaped, but I think that is due to its large size and closeness.

Note: 145 LY in diameter.

Shapley Sawyer Classification: V
Distance: 22,182 LY
Type: Halo Globular
Position w.r.t. core of galaxy: Above and towards the core.
Any stars resolved: Yes
Undergoing Core Collapse: No
