Description

Last night despite the insane winds, I was able to capture this little gem...the Horsehead Nebula. Located 1375 light years from my backyard (perhaps a little further from yours), this nebula in Orion is one of the more identifiable nebula due to its resemblance to a small horse head in the center of this image.

Space is not empty and the dark horse head is actually caused by interstellar dust and gas obscuring the stars and nebula behind it. As with some other images I have posted, the red is due to ionized hydrogen in this star formation region. The second image in gray is just measuring the hydrogen with a dedicated filter.
