Description

Bathing in a cosmic sea of glowing red hydrogen, swims the Crescent Nebula, astronomical identification, NGC 6888. 5000 light years away from us, it resides in the constellation of Cygnus, the Swan, and is a cosmic bubble about 25 light-years across, shaped by winds blowing from its central star, WR 136. The star is shedding its outer envelope in strong stellar winds, and the nebula’s complex structures is likely the result of this strong wind interacting with material ejected in an earlier phase. Burning fuel at a prodigious rate and near the end of its stellar life this star should ultimately go out with a bang in a spectacular supernova explosion. Will we live to see the explosion ? Maybe it is already happened and the light from the explosion hasn’t reached us yet ?
