Description

M78 is a reflection nebula located in the constellation Orion. It is a bright and compact cloud of gas and dust that reflects light from nearby stars, giving it a bluish appearance. M78 is approximately 1,600 light years away from Earth and has a diameter of about 5 light years. The nebula is illuminated by a cluster of young stars at its center, which are surrounded by dense clouds of gas and dust that are in the process of collapsing to form new stars. M78 is a popular target for amateur astronomers due to its location in the winter sky and its striking appearance.
