Description

C 1396 - Elephant Trunk Nebula - June 2022
Planewave CDK 12.5 - AIS6200MM
A-P 1100 GTO AE, Antlia Pro 3nm NB filters
H,S,O: (18,15,16 x 300s exposures, Bin 2, Gain 200)
Total Integration Time = 4.1 hours
The Elephant Trunk Nebula is a patch of cool, relatively dense dust and gases within the IC1396 nebulosity complex within Cepheus.
The complex shapes arise from the gases collapsing to create new stars, that then are blown away from the very stars that the gases created. This one supposed looks like an Elephant's trunk.
The false colours employed here are used according to Hubble Palette and represent the relative emission intensities of hydrogen, and oxygen and sulfur ions. In this case, the gas and dust is so dense in places that it blocks any light from behind it and is only visible in silhouette.
The Elephant trunk is 2400ly away and is over 20 ly long
This was my second test at using high gain on my camera to determine if a good NB image of a bright nebula could be obtained within one short summer night.
