Description

A spiral galaxy located just eight million light-years away, it has a reddish glow produced by atomic hydrogen gas, indicating a higher than usual number of HII regions for star formation. This is an object that eluded Charles Messier when compiling his catalog but was discovered by Friedrich Wilhelm Herschel in 1788, and is cataloged as Caldwell 7. This galaxy is the subject of study for harboring a few Cepheid variable stars.
