Description

Here we have the familiar M16, the Eagle Nebula or Star Queen Nebula. This beautiful star forming cloud is famous for the Pillars of Creation made famous by the iconic Hubble image.

I have not done much in the way of nebulae recently and I hope to try to gain some experience in this area for the upcoming summer season. My plan with this was to do HaLRGB and see what would happen. I never quite was able to map the color in a satisfactory way. The RGB image looked good but when I added in the luminance layer and many iterations of blending in the Ha, it never looked right.

I have seen several exceptionally nice monochrome images from some excellent imagers as of late, most notably, Sky-watcher Johny's Elephant Trunk, and thought that perhaps I could publish this project primarily as a monochrome image. So here it is. That one consists of a blend of the L data and the Ha data.

I played around with this image quite a bit and found that with the resolution of the ASI183 with its tiny pixels, I could crop down quite a ways and still maintain a passable image. I decided to try to highlight the pillars as crops of the larger monochrome and HALRGB images.

Yes, probably asking a little too much and the resolution is not quite there but I think the pillar images are nice to look at from 18" away from the monitor or so...

Finally, I'm tossing in a starless version of this as well. Not a big fan of starless images generally, except for some exceptional galaxy images I've seen, most notably a fantastic M31 by Doug Struble. But I think this Pillars of Creation one is OK.

Anyway, as always comments/criticism always welcome. Clear Skies and good health...
