Description

This wide field image captures both the Flame Nebula (NGC 2024) and the Horsehead Nebula (Barnard 33) found within Orion's Belt.

The Flame Nebula is an emission nebula approximately 1500 ly from Earth. Its emissions are driven by the bright star Alnitak in Orion's belt, whose intense UV emissions activate the large hydrogen clouds found there.

The Horsehead Nebula is a dark nebula within the Orion molecular cloud. It is known for its distinctive horse head shape and is approximately 1375 ly from Earth.

This image is composed of 174 x 120sec exposures.  A lighter touch on some aspect of the post processing to retain the background dust clouds of the Orion region.
