Featuring Gabrielle Mistral nebula and the famous Gem Cluster this widefield image shows the full extent of the nebulosity cloud north of the Carina Nebula.

Young stars in NGC 3293 huddle together against this backdrop of clouds of glowing gas and lanes of dust. The star cluster would have been just a cloud of gas and dust itself about ten million years ago, but as stars began to form it became the bright group we see here. (ESO)

The Great Carina Nebula is home to strange stars and iconic nebulas. Named for its home constellation, the huge star-forming region is larger and brighter than the Great Orion Nebula but less well known because it is so far south -- and because so much of humanity lives so far north. The featured image shows in great detail the northern-most part of the Carina Nebula.

Visible nebulas include the semi-circular filaments surrounding the active star Wolf-Rayet 23 (WR23). Just below center is the Gabriela Mistral Nebula consisting of an emission nebula of glowing gas (IC 2599) surrounding the small open cluster of stars (NGC 3324). Above the image center is NGC 3293, while to its right is the relatively faint emission nebula designated Loden 153. (text - APOD)

Views by Submitters (available since September 19th, 2023) Every image is assigned to 50% of available Submitters. In the event that at least 80% of them don't view the image before its time in the IOTD/TP process expires, it's assigned to the other 50% of Submitters and the process begins anew.
Promotions by Submitters When 3 distinct Submitters promote the image, it moves on to the next stage of the process: evaluation for Top Pick status. This requirement, in addition to anonymization of images and distribution to only a subset of them, prevents biases and ensures that the best images are selected.
Promotions by Reviewers When 3 distinct Reviewers promote the image, it moves on to the next stage of the process: evaluation for IOTD status.
Early dismissal Staff members have a lot of images to inspect on a daily basis, and they can dismiss images if they believe they don't meet the requirements for IOTD/TP selection. If an image is dismissed 5 times, it's removed from the process. This streamlines the process and ensures that any bias present in promotions could be overruled by other staff members.
