Description

The Veil Nebula is a remnant of a supernova explosion that happened roughly 10,000 years ago. It's about 1,500 light years from Earth. The blue in this picture represents glowing ionized oxygen (O III). The light emitted by ionized hydrogen (H-alpha) appears in red.

I shot this over two evenings from my patio in Menlo Park, California, where light pollution is severe. The L-eXtreme filter I used passes light through just two 7nm bands, one for H-alpha and one for O III. It shuts out most, but not all, of the light pollution.
