Description

Are angels always this hairy?

The Angel Nebula is a very interesting target, with lots going on both in colour and dynamics. Reflection nebulae, emission nebulae, dark nebulae.. it has everything.

I included some notes of my processing flow below, let me know if you find them useful and I could make it a regular thing.

Processing notes

Preparing luminance:
  • Combine L, R, G, B stacks into superluminance (here: “LL”) with ImageIntegration
  • Apply BlurXTerminator and NoiseXTerminator

Preparing RGB:
  • Apply BlurXTerminator (correct only)
  • Colour calibration with SPCC
  • Apply BlurXTerminator and NoiseXTerminator

Preparing LRGB:
  • Stretch RGB and LL identically (use same midpoint-value in HistogramTransformation)
  • LRGBCombination
  • Unstretch image back to linear (use 1-m midpoint for HT)

Processing in PI:
  • Stretch image with GeneralizedHyperbolicStretch and HT, multiple iterations
  • SCNR 50%
  • Run StarXTerminator, separate into “nebula” and “stars”

Processing in Photoshop:
  • Bring nebula and stars into Photoshop as separate layers
  • De-emphasize stars with 1px minimum filter and slight levels adjustment
  • Apply Camera Raw Filter to nebula, tweak to taste

Processing in Lightroom:
  • Final color/saturation and contrast adjustments
