Description

Messier 51, discovered on October 13, 1773, by Charles Messier, is a double galaxy system located in the constellation Canes Venatici at about 31 million light-years from Earth.
It’s one of the most known interacting galaxy pairs in astronomy and it was also the subject of very early theoretical investigations into galaxy interactions.
The system contains two galaxies.
The larger one M51a (also known as Whirlpool Galaxy or NGC 5194) is a grand-design spiral galaxy; it has very well-defined arms, containing HII regions.
The smaller M51b (or NGC 5195) is a dwarf galaxy, connected to its companion by a dust-rich tidal bridge.
Because of irregular weather, I preferred to use my OSC ASI533MC; I took 201 shots over the course of 3 nights and was able to save only 81 (6h 45m final integration on 16h 45m total exposure).
