Description

One of the brightest and biggest galaxies, M106 rivals even the Andromeda. It is the largest member of the Canes Venatici II, a group of galaxies in the Local Super Cluster, located at a distance of about 25 million light years from Earth and has a size of 135,000 LY. Messier 106 is classified as a SABbc type galaxy, which means that it is an intermediate between a normal and barred spiral galaxy. It is also designated as Seyfert II and has huge extensions in X-Ray and Radio frequencies. This probably means that there's a large black hole in the center of M106 consuming a lot of matter and emitting at those frequencies.
Messier 106 was discovered by the French astronomer Pierre Méchain in July of 1781.
