Description

The California Nebula is a region of star formation located in the constellation of Perseus. Its name is due to its resemblance to the outline of the state of California in the United States.

This emission nebula contains bright clouds of gas and dust, where new stars are being born. The reddish  tones come from the radiation of young and hot stars that ionize the surrounding gas. It's an impressive spectacle in the night sky.

The technical name of the California Nebula is NGC 1499. The designation NGC stands for "New General Catalogue" and is used to catalog astronomical objects.
