Description

NGC 7380 (Wizard Nebula)

11/12/23, 12:00AM (UTC)

Located in the constellation Cepheus, NGC 7380 is a young open star cluster first discovered by Caroline Herschel in 1787. This open star cluster also contains the emission nebula designated as Sh2-142 and is known as the Wizard Nebula.

This object spans ~20 light-years (6 pc) across and its age is estimated to be 4-11.9 million years. At the center of the cluster lies DH Cephei. DH Cephei is a double lined spectroscopic binary system consisting of two massive O-type stars. This system is the primary ionizing source for the surrounding H II region and the source for new star formation.
