Description

The first cloud-free sky since a few months. The initial haze disappeared around 10pm as southern constellations surfaced from the sea horizon, including the top three stars of the Southern Cross and Alpha Centauri though very barely. However, my scope in the front yard was pointing at M101. Just before the moon rose around midnight Scorpius already heralded above horizon in its whole glory. Moonlight which reflected a bit in haze outshined the Milky Way.

As the moon in Sagittarius ascended above 27° (38° max that night) I configured the C8 for lunar imaging. After a few images with the IMX178, I shot a sequence of images with the IMX290 in two variations each, one at 15ms (60fps) another at 5ms exposure (170fps) and adjusted gain against the histogram in order to examine the effect of short exposures on cutting through turbulent air as inspired by our friend @Henning Schmidt . Strong air turbulences would normally prohibit lunar imaging, but this time it came in handy for my tests with exposure times. The difference is extremely subtle while seeing varied. There is a slight advantage of 15ms (Rev H).

As the night was still comfortable, I took a few color images with the IMX585 and finally a color mosaic of the lunar globe, just in time before twilight ended with morning clouds coming about. Libration in latitude was at +6.7° shifting northern craters such as Pythagoras into view.

Also eye-witnessed the burning of disintegrated rocket parts at 11:35 UTC with trajectory between Ursa Minor and Ursa Major through Draco's head towards east as seen from my vantage. So stunned and wondering I failed to draw my smartphone for a quick shot, but the event was in the news over here.

Condition: transparent but turbulent air, wind gusts, 20ºC / 67%RH.
