Description

IC 434 is an emission nebula in the constellation of Orion, about 1500 light years away from us. Its average temperature is about 6000 K. The nebula is illuminated by the star Alnitak, a young and hot star of spectral class O9.5, which ionizes the hydrogen atoms in the nebula, making them emit red light in the visible and blue light in the infrared. Inside IC 434 there is the Horsehead Nebula, a dark cloud shaped like an equine, also known as Barnard 33. Nearby there are also NGC 2023 and NGC 2024, two reflection and emission nebulae that contain young and hot stars. NGC 2023 reflects the light of the star HD 37903, a star of spectral class B2, and is one of the largest reflection nebulae known, with a diameter of about 4 light years. NGC 2024 has an irregular shape and contains a cluster of stars visible in X-rays. All these nebulae are part of the Orion molecular cloud complex, a region rich in star formation. To see them you need a powerful telescope and an H-alpha filter. Long exposure photos or CCD images show the details and colors of the nebula.
