Description

Sunspots form when the Sun's chaotic magnetic field grows dense in a certain area, which inhibits the convection process that brings energy up from the Sun's core. This results in cooler regions on the photosphere that can last days or even a few months. Sunspots can be as small as 10 miles across (although I probably can't resolve those very well in my telescope) or as large as 100,000 miles across -- many times the size of the Earth!
