Description

She Lights the Way

Sometimes all you need to do to see something extraordinary is to just look up and take stock of what’s around you. About a year ago I was passing Liberty State Park one evening on the NJ Turnpike and noticed that there was a full moon rising over New York Harbor near the Statue of Liberty. From the turnpike though, it was a fleeting moment - but it planted the seeds of an idea. I did some research about the next moonrise and got an app called The Photographer’s Ephemeris for my iPad. After doing some calculations, I realized that the following lunar cycle would permit me to station my tripod and camera on the promenade at Liberty State Park, that I could line up the moon with Miss Liberty. My first attempt did not work out as planned. The exposure of the bright moon against the dark sky and Miss Liberty gave either a burnned out moon or a white blob. After two additional trips I was able to get everything perfect. The passing of the moon across the torch in exactly the right place takes no more than 30-60 seconds - at most.

The resulting image, She Lights the Way, is as inspirational as it is beautiful. To me, the image tells a story about hope, encouragement and the limitless possibilities that are afforded America. The other message that it sends is to take a moment, even if you are driving on the NJ Turn Pike - and just look up to take in what’s special about our world and universe.
