Description

The galaxy M33 is a spiral galaxy that belongs to the Local Group, the same group of galaxies that our Milky Way belongs to. The galaxy M33 is also known as the Triangulum Galaxy, because it is located in the constellation of Triangulum. The galaxy M33 is one of the closest galaxies to us, it is about 3 million light-years away from Earth. The galaxy M33 has a diameter of about 60 thousand light-years and contains about 40 billion stars. One of the most interesting features of the galaxy M33 are its numerous emission nebulae, which are regions of ionized gas that emit light in different wavelengths. Some of the most famous nebulae of the galaxy M33 are NGC 604, the largest HII region of the galaxy, NGC 595, a nebula with a shape similar to that of a butterfly, and IC 131, a nebula with a shape similar to that of a heart. In a recent, spectacular image, the JWST space telescope was able to resolve the individual stars of the galaxy; the use of the infrared camera also made it possible to photograph galaxies behind the clouds of M33.
