Description

I had the opportunity to try out an ASIAIR Mini recently.  Since this control device will only work with ZWO hardware, I had to dig out my venerable ASI1600MM out of the closet for this test.  (I haven't used 1600MM in a while because I prefer using my more modern QHY 268M/268C cameras, which produce better resuls.) Overall, I found the experience of using a tablet rather than a Windows PC and Sequence Generator Pro to be easier, once I got past the initial learning curve and driver installation woes.

What I liked:
  1. While there are some exceptions, the interface is simple and intuitive.
  2. Less work than using a Windows PC with Sequence Generator Pro.
  3. Connects easily via WiFi.
  4. The polar alignment routine is brilliant!
  5. Easy to select and frame a target.

What I didn't like:
  1. Although I can understand why ZWO made it impossible to use cameras and other hardware from their competitors, it's not good for people like me who own a mixture of products from other companies.
  2. I could not see a way to gradually warm up the camera at the end of an image sequece.  I may have missed this, or the issue has been resolved since I used the ASIAIR Mini last summer.  If not, I don't think it's good for the camera to abruptly shut off the sensor cooler, especially in warm weather.

Because of the above cons, I am no longer using the ASIAIR Mini and I've returned to using my Windows Mini PC.  I plan to use the ASIAIR Mini for planetary and lunar photgraphy with my 14" Goto Dobsonian scope, since I have a ZWO planetary camera that does not require cooling.

Finally, I thought is was high time to update my watermark logo.  Why Granite Mountain?   First, it's a famous mountain in Prescott Arizona, which is close to my home.  Second, Granite Mountain Photography will be the name of my new company.  More to come on this in the near future.

Title: The ASIAIR Mini fit nicely on the finder shoe of my RedCat 71. Normally, I use the MeLe Mini PC, shown at the top rear.
