Description

M31, the Andromeda Galaxy along with the sister galaxies M32 and M110. This is my most recent attempt at imaging this behemoth. It is located roughly 2.5 million light years from Earth, making it part of the local group of galaxies that contains the Milky Way. I used some Ha data to bring visibility to the nebula within the spiral arms. Each of the red regions seen along the outer edges are these star forming regions. All together there is roughly 26 hours of data used to create this image.

I really like pictures of galaxies. There is something surreal about looking at a structure that is hundreds of thousands of light-years in diameter, containing nearly 1 trillion stars. For me it really starts to put the sheer scope of the universe into perspective. It is impossible to look at this galaxy, one of literally billions of galaxies in existence, and not think that there isn't some intelligent species staring back at our Milky Way and wondering if we exist.
