Description

IC 443, the Jellyfish Nebula, is a supernova remnant located in the constellation Gemini. The supernova that formed IC 443 is thought to have occurred 30,000 to 35,000 years ago leaving behind a neutron star, the remnants of the progenitor star. You can see the location of this neutron star in an old APOD image from June 2, 2006. What is unusual about this neutron star is that it is not aligned with the expanding shells of gas produced by the supernova. 

The Jellyfish Nebula is a favorite subject of mine and I have been attempting to do it justice for almost as long as I have been interested in astrophotography. In this attempt, I am combining RGB data with OIII data. I use continuum subtraction to remove the contribution of the blue signal from the OIII data. At this point, I deviated from the standard process by using the NBColourMapping script from Mike Cranfield and Adam Block to add the residual signal on top of the RGB data. This technique lets me choose the color of the OIII enhancement.
