Description

Buried within the Soul nebula (IC 1848, Westerhout 5) is IC 1871, the Whirling Dervish nebula (not to be confused with RCW 49 in Carina, which carries the same moniker). The Whirling Dervish is located underneath (from this vantage) what is sometimes colloquially referred to as "the bridge in the Soul"--a heavy strand of emission gas between the eastern and western oxygen-rich areas of the Soul nebula.

The little black formation between the pillars above the bridge has another meaning to me, however. The first time I shot this target (I'm on my leventy-thirty-ninth pass at Heart & Soul stuff now), my daughter saw that and said, "That's ET!" I said, "No, that's Mrs. ET and boy is she pissed. Junior did NOT have permission to drive the family starship to a nearby galaxy to play with some skanky human named Eliot!" She's so angry--perhaps because he didn't phone home for days--that she kicked up a Whirling Dervish to go after him!

I've attached a couple of other crops from this data set as revisions.
