Description

Comet C/2022 E3 (ZTF) is a recently discovered comet that was first observed by the Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF) on March 9, 2022. It is a long-period comet, meaning that it takes more than 200 years to orbit the sun. This particular comet is known for its green color, which is due to the presence of diatomic carbon (C2) gas in its coma. Diatomic carbon emits a greenish-yellow light when it is excited by sunlight or other radiation. The green color of the comet is therefore a result of this emission process.Comet C/2022 E3 (ZTF) made its closest approach to the sun on March 23, 2022, when it was about 0.9 astronomical units (AU) away from the sun. It was also closest to Earth on March 24, 2022, when it was about 0.55 AU away from our planet.During its close approach to Earth, the comet was visible with binoculars or small telescopes in the northern hemisphere. It appeared as a faint greenish object with a tail pointing away from the sun. After its close approach to the sun and Earth, the comet began to move away from the sun and fade from view.
