This combined image shows Comet 12p/ Pons-Brooks as it appeared over six nights from New Zealand. The image dates, from top to bottom, are 28 April, 29 April, 4 May, 8 May, 9 May, and 13 May. This comparison reveals the changing structure of the comet and especially its ion tail, as it moves away from the sun and eventually out of the inner solar system. Images taken from Wellington, New Zealand just after sunset and within a very short window of opportunity. The comet was low in the sky in the Southern Hemisphere when it was brightest in late April. By mid May, the comet was visually fading, but still revealed details and with possible flare-ups. Each image is a stack of 60 second subs for a total of about 25 minutes for each image.

Comet 12P is a periodic comet with an orbital period of 71 years and around 30 km in size. From the southern hemisphere in late April it was easily seen in binoculars and just on the edge of unaided visual sighting.

Due to its stable periodic orbit, Comet 12P can be located as recorded in previous sightings in the years 245 [likely], 1385, 1457, 1812 (named), 1884, and 1954 (Meyer et al., 2021)
