Description

NGC 2442 is an intermediate spiral galaxy located around 76 million light-years away in the constellation of Volans. It is also often referred to as The Meat Hook Galaxy or the Cobra and the Mouse.
The galaxy’s distorted shape is most likely the result of a close encounter with a smaller galaxy some time in the past. The smaller galaxy on the right is PGC 21457. It looks like the cobra is eyeing the smaller galaxy! Two supernovae have been discovered in NGC 2442.

Imaged in LRGB and H alpha on the Planewave CDK 1000 at Observatorio El Sauce, Chile.

Image Acquisition: Mike Selby. Thank you to Mike for the wonderful opportunity to process this amazing galaxy! This one is so deep south that it is fortunate I had this opportunity!

NOTE: this is a different data set from my previous image of NGC 2442.
