I am an interstellar medium enthusiast. I began my quest in astronomy in 1995 as an amateur astronomer in New Mexico. I taught my self to make Astro Photography with a C8 and 35 mm SLRs. I learned CCD astronomy at Vega Bray observatory in 1999. In the past 23 years I have studied the galaxy as seen from our position in the galaxy. I describe my self as an Astronomer Observer and a Virtual Astronomy instrumentalist because I have developed techniques in Photoshop to better describe the ISM across multiple wavelengths.
I describe my work as Multi Wavelength Astronomy Data Composition. I prefer virtual astronomy to direct CCD data imaging. I work intensely with NASA Skyview as data source to compose images from optical DSS and Mellinger data sets. for Infra Red data I use IRAS, WISE, AKARI, PLANK space telescopes datasets as well as the High Energy data sets from FERMI and ROSAT space telescopes. I have also composited IR and radio data sets. I created a digital darkroom technique for IR Enhanced Blink Comparison that merges WISE, 2MASS and with DSS 1&2. This technique is applicable for detection of near by M class Red Dwarf stars and Proper Motion in the ISM as well as super flares.
Digital darkroom techniques permit the addition and subtraction of flux from specific portions of the EM spectrum. The very long IR from PLANK 874 GHz traces all of the cold dust visible from Earth. The warmer dust in the ISM can be seen in the mid IR with WISE 12µm and 22µm. The DSS 1&2 can be processed to remove the point sources contrast stretch weak flux from the ionized and cool ISM. The 2MASS data in the NIR can be processed to serve as point sources for both the WISE and the DSS. The SHASSHA Ha survey can be composited on to the processes DSS already enhanced with the mid IR from WISE.
The high energy, all sky surveys, can also be composited with visual and infrared surveys such as MELINGER and IRAS. This is one of the best applications of the technique briefly outlined above. Astronomy has yet to produce high resolution, high energy, all sky surveys. The portion of the EM spectrum is covered by ROSAT and FERMI. Similarly in the radio portion of the EM spectrum there is a lacking high resolution all sky surveys. High energy and Low energy can be composited effectively because of similar angular resolution. Wide areas of the sky can be studied this way. The gross distribution of the ISM can be rendered in this way.
Ultimately the ISM can be completely captures and rendered with self consistent methods within the digital darkroom environment. The composition technique relies on transferring the acquired flux values to layer transparency function for a stack of images. thus in a stack, images corresponding to discrete portions of the EM spectrum are each as present in the composited stack as its flux is abundant for any given layer. The result is a "composited plate" This captures and reveals the structure and extent of the interstellar medium.
I also create Stenography with any camera. I prefer the planetary exploration missions. I have worked intensely with the ROSETTA, OSIRIS and NAVCAM data sets. I have also worked with the CASSINI dataset. and DAWN mission to Ceres. Any planetary exploration mission is of interest to me. I work directly on screen with cross stereo image processing and have developed methods to transform contiguous frames from moving platforms to serve as stereo pairs.
Sky view is responsible for the registration and cartographic projection of all the raster images they serve. thus the registration and diverse data is more akin to map making that it is to portrait. Most Astor-photography is portraiture of the deep sky. My images using sky view and Photoshop are post production to a series of all sky surveys across time. many by space telescopes.
I hope this helps the users and managers of Astrobin understand how my images differ from the extraordinary accomplishments of Astor-photography has achieved in our time.
