Description

WR140 (HD 193793) is a Wolf-Rayet star in the constellation Cygnus at some 8900 ly distant, next to the Propeller Nebula. It has the spectral class WC7 and is a member of a spectroscopic binary system (SB2) with an O5-V star in a highly eccentric orbit with a period of some 2900 days.
This composite spectrum is clearly dominated by the WR star. The only thing I could resolve a little bit from the O-Star are the Hγ4340 and Hβ4861 lines. Next time I will try it with the 8" Newtonian and the Star Analyser 200 on the ASI2600MC-Pro, the resolution should be much better then. But I haven't found the time yet to calibrate this combination.

In Rev-B you can see the profile and in Rev-C the Raw-spectrum. The Propeller Nebula in the Background is from an earlier image and just for orientation.

Rev-D is my processing from the the latest data of WR140 from the JWST and the MIRI camera. I used the filters F770W, F1500W and F2100W. Both stars in the WR140 system create powerful stellar winds that shoot out into space at a rate of around 3,000 kilometres (1,864 miles) per second. As a result, both are losing mass at a fast rate. Because of the binary star’s 7.94-year orbital cycle, wind impact and dust generation occur on a regular basis every 7.94 years. The Webb picture contains dust shells dating back roughly 160 years, with 20 distinct rings.
