      Description

      So, finally, this is it! - I have been chasing after Simeis 147 for three years now!

      It was in 2021 when I first started with a OSC-camera, but I discarded the data because I was not satisfied with the quality of the narrowband images.
      So, trying again in winter 2022 and 2023, with a mono camera, with a total of 10 hours of exposure time for Ha and OIII each.
      This was processed as HOO with RGB stars.

      Since this is a 2-panel mosaic at 550mm focal length, the total integration time amounts to just over 45 hours, collected during 16 nights, making this my longest deep sky project yet!

      Simeis 147 is a supernova remnant between the constellations Taurus and Auriga and goes by the popular nickname “Spaghetti Nebula”. The supernova causing these twisting filaments of shocked gas is believed to have occurred some 40,000 years ago. At a distance of 3,000 light-years this stellar debris cloud spans 150 light-years across, covering nearly 6 full moons on the sky.

      If you look closely, it seems that some filaments with jagged edges are obstructed by tiny clouds of dark dust. This could be mistaken for a low signal to noise ratio or sharpening artefacts, but, since I took all exposures during new moon, I believe this is genuine.
      What an amazing beast!
