Description

Sh2-115 is a relatively faint emission nebula in the constellation Cygnus (Sh2 is the Sharpless 2 catalog). In the upper right portion of the image is a little nebula called Abell 71, and also Sh2-116. It was originally thought to be a planetary nebula, but a 1991 study found almost no OIII (oxygen-III) signal in it, which is characteristic of planetary nebulae (other astrophotographers have noticed the same), so it's regarded as a small HII (glowing hydrogen gas) region.

Cygnus is usually thought of as a summertime object, but even at the lowly latitude of 40 degrees, it's up for quite a long time into the fall and winter -- I imaged it from my backyard in Dayton all the way till Christmas.
