Description

This is heavily cropped and zoomed to show detail of NCG 7331, and also Stephan's Quintet (NGCs 7317-7320) to the left of it. I used different PixInsight GAME script masks for NGC 7331 and the quintet, then brought out the detail with the HDRMultiscale process (# of Layers 5 and 4, Small Scale 32 scaling function).
  • The galaxy is estimated to be about 100,000 light-years in diameter, making it slightly larger than our Milky Way galaxy.
  • NGC 7331 is about 40M light years from Earth.
    • The other members of the group, NGC 7335, 7336, 7337 and 7340, lie far in the background at distances of approximately 300-350 million light years.
    • Stephan's Quintet is about 290M light years away.

  • In 2014, astronomers discovered a spiral arm in NGC 7331 that appears to be rotating in the opposite direction to the other spiral arms, which is a rare phenomenon in galaxies.
