Description

When the seeing is good, it can be good for a while, as it was on the evening of the 12th of October AEST (11th October UT). I imaged Saturn and then, 3 hours later, when Jupiter reached the Meridian I imaged it as well.  In both cases the seeing was excellent, which was particularly surprising for Jupiter at an altitude of 41 degrees.

For Saturn, I made 11 runs of 90 secs for each of the RGB colour channels. Enceladus was at the lower right below the rings in this substantially north up image. Tethys, could be seen passing behind the planet a half hour earlier, and, for your interest, I have included a single green image, where the moon is just being occluded by the planet's limb at upper right. Quite a bit of activity can be seen in the planet's atmopshere with a large oval at the Central Meridian in the Southern Hemisphere. It is interesting to see how well we can now see the yellow Equatorial Zone (EZ) below the rings now, as the changing ring tilt makes that possible. Note how well the limb of the planet can be seen through the Cassini Division!

For Jupiter I made 7 RGB runs of 60 secs per colour channel. The detail I was able to record on Jupiter is stupendous with a bright outbreak in the NEB a standout. There is also a nice red barge in the SEB.

I have scaled these images so they are to the correct relative sizes. It is hard to believe that the volume of Saturn and all the other planets is less than that of Jupiter.
