Description

The Spaghetti Nebula, Simeis 147, Sharpless 2-240, is a large, extremely faint supernova remnant located on the border between the constellations of Taurus and Auriga about 3 degrees east of Elnath (or Alnath), Beta Tauri.

Also known as SNR G180.0-01.7, the faint filamentary structure of the nebula spans more than 3 degrees of sky, or 6 full moons across. This spherical shell is 150 light years in diameter with an estimated distance of 3,000 light years.. The supernova explosion, which occurred about 35,000 years ago, formed the nebula, and at its core, is a spinning neutron star known as pulsar PSR J0538+2817, emitting a strong radio signal.

Simeis 147 was discovered by Grigori Abramovich Shajn and V.T. Hase in 1952 at the Crimean Astrophysical Observatory at Simeis in the former U.S.S.R. with a 25-inch Schmidt camera on photographic plates.

A small ionized HII nebula, SH2-242 (LBN 826), is in the lower left of the image.
