Description

Here's a shot  of the Horsehead Nebula I processed from the SPICA telescope in Cyprus! They're a remote hosting and remote imaging observatory that offers a subscription to the data from this GSO 10" f/5.3 truss-tube Ritchey-Chretien. Dark skies make up for a lot -- the camera is a ZWO 294MC Pro, but with less than two hours of data, I got this lovely result

This is the Horsehead Nebula, a dark nebula complex in the constellation Orion. Just to the left out of view is the bright star Alnitak, the easternmost (farthest to the left here in the Northern hemisphere) star of Orion's Belt. The nebula is about 1,375 lightyears from Earth. The red gas behind the horse's head is hydrogen that is both energized and shaped by the star Sigma Orionis, which is out of the top of the frame here. Below and to the left of the main Horsehead structure is the magnitude 7.8 star HD 38903, which has carved out its own little cave in the dust.
