Description

The star cluster NGC 7380 was discovered by William Herschel's sister Caroline in 1787, and the surrounding emission nebulosity later became known as the Wizard Nebula.  It is located about 8,500 light years from Earth, with an apparent magnitude of about 7.2 and a size of about 20 light years.  It is estimated to be only about 4 to 12 million years old.

The Wizard Nebula is always a pleasing object to shoot:  It's a great all-night target for my location, and it's fairly bright so you can start seeing results quickly at lower f/ratios.  Although I imaged this for several nights, I couldn't stop myself from stacking it after each night just to see how it was coming out.  Although I still need to tweak my image train a bit, I'm thrilled at being able to capture beautiful targets like this without high-end equipment and sky quality.

This is a straight SHO rendition with no fancy channel mixing, though I did need to minimize the HA Green and push the red curves quite a bit.  While it looks like the wizard may have eaten too many Fruity Pebbles (like my kids), people seem to really like the color scheme.

Stacked and color-combined in APP, in both RGB (for stars) and SHO (for nebulosity).  Post-processing done in PixInsight with Russel Corman's amazing plugins and  the new SPCC and Generalized Hyperbolic Stretch processes.
