Description

December 21st. The shortest day of the year. The Sun rises from the horizon as far south as it will all year, and starts to move eastward from this point.

I grabbed the Nikon D750 and my 300mm lens to shoot the 5% illuminated moonrise at 6:00am on the 21st. About 2 hours later on the same morning the sun rose. By that time I was so cold I could feel the heat from the sun almost immediately.

I created a multiframe panorama for each and overlaid them so the landscape was basically identical and would not shift from the moon shot to the sun shot. This effect works much better on a PC rather then a phone.

This was taken looking south southeast from Burlington across the Burlington Bay to the steel mills in Hamilton Ontario about 1.25 km distant. Considering the steam and flames, the energy waste at these mills is mind boggling. The flame on the right is easily as large as my house. Why no energy recover processes are in place I have no idea. It burns 24 hours a day 7 days a week....

Hamilton has a population of 540,000. Its bortle 8 skyline overpowers the sky in my backyard where I take all my photos. Hamilton is / was the home of David Byrne (Talking Heads, one of the world's coolest bands), Dave Thomas, Graham Greene, and Martin Short. It also is home to McMaster University (from which I graduated) where Eugene Levy, Ivan Reitman and Roberta Bondar (a real astronaut!)  attended.

Its been so cloudy with the Great Lake effect, normal astrophotography has been impossible for a month or so. I was lucky to have the opportunity to shoot these photos between the clouds.

Clear Skies and Happy Festivus (for the rest of us)!
Bob
