Description

Last month I had the opportunity to spend a few days out in northern Arizona, one of my favorite places on Earth due in no small part to the abundance of very dark skies. During my trip I was able to spend several nights out imaging the Milky Way from these very dark skies. One of those nights was from Sunset Crater Volcano National Monument north-east of Flagstaff.

Sunset Crater is a cinder cone volcano which erupted a thousand years ago and is the youngest volcano in the San Francisco Volcanic Mountain range in northern Arizona. Sunset Crater, seen in my photo as the ridge on the left side of the image under the Cygnus Region of the Milky Way, is the namesake of the National Monument but I was absolutely blown away by the number of cinder cone volcanos in and around the National Monument, they are everywhere! In fact there are more than 600 volcanos in this area! Sunset Crater NM also happens to have Bortle class 2 skies and is registered as an International Dark Sky Park.
