Description

Messier 3 (M3; also, NGC 5272) is a Globular cluster of stars in the Northern constellation Canes Venatici.
It’s one of the largest and brightest clusters in the Milky Way, containing about 500.000 stars (274 of which are known variable stars).
Messier 3 lies 31.600 light-years above the galactic plane, it’s centered at 32.600 l.y. away from Earth and 38.800 l.y. from the center of our galaxy.
M3 was the first Messier object discovered by Charles Messier himself, who mistook it for a nebula without stars. In 1784 William Herschel resolved the stars and corrected the original mistake.
