For the last 2 months we’ve been “eying” this one of M94 (NGC4736) the Croc’s Eye Galaxy in Canes Venatici. Why you may ask? Some see this one as more of a Cat’s Eye and we felt it was important to get the name and the look right! While Croc’s Eye won out, this conundrum begs the question “what would the world look like if crocs were substituted for cats?”

1) Alice in Wonderland would have ended abruptly (and wouldn’t be rated G) because, instead of quipping with Alice, the “Cheshire Croc” would attempt to make her a meal

2) Hermione Granger would have been expelled from Hogwarts because her pet “Crocshanks” would have eaten Scabbers, Hedwig, Trevor, and any other unsuspecting magical pet

3) “Crocs the Musical” probably wouldn’t be the fourth longest running show on Broadway

4) Phoebe Buffay would be singing “Smelly Croc” to everyone in Central Perk

5) Instead of giving Batman a run for his money, “Croc Woman” would be Aquaman’s arch nemesis

6) Quantum Mechanics would look very different today due to the fact that the scientific community would have wholeheartedly rejected the idea that Schrödinger could wrestle a crocodile into a box

Hopefully we’ve brought you to tears of laughter with this one (and not the crocodile kind)!

Views by Submitters (available since September 19th, 2023) Every image is assigned to 50% of available Submitters. In the event that at least 80% of them don't view the image before its time in the IOTD/TP process expires, it's assigned to the other 50% of Submitters and the process begins anew.
Promotions by Submitters When 3 distinct Submitters promote the image, it moves on to the next stage of the process: evaluation for Top Pick status. This requirement, in addition to anonymization of images and distribution to only a subset of them, prevents biases and ensures that the best images are selected.

Early dismissal Staff members have a lot of images to inspect on a daily basis, and they can dismiss images if they believe they don't meet the requirements for IOTD/TP selection. If an image is dismissed 5 times, it's removed from the process. This streamlines the process and ensures that any bias present in promotions could be overruled by other staff members.
