Description

The great Orion nebula (M42) in LRGB!

With over two month of consecutive clouds in Oregon, we had a night around the new moon in February with clearing. I ended up driving a few hours from home to get to Bortle 3 skies, and spent most of the night shooting in freezing 24F temperatures. There were light clouds for some of the night and I made the stupid mistake of shooting each filter completely rather than switching between filters throughout the night. I ended up with good data for L,R and B channels but did not have any usable Green. I ended up shooting green from Portland (Bortle 7) a few nights later and also added data to the blue channel. In the end, I was impressed with the amount of detail from mixing dark sky and light polluted sky data; and this is only about 5 hours of data at F4.8.

The well known challenge of processing M42 is dealing with the brightness in Trapezium, while not over-darkening the core. I ended up using a minimal about of HDR transformation and blending into the image with PixelMath. Also used GHS and masked stretching to blend the RGB and Luminance. There was a lot of nice color in the M42 core which I was excited to see!
