Description

This is an emission nebula in the constellation Cassiopeia, and lies about 11,000 lightyears away. The red-orange-yellow areas have a lot of glowing hydrogen and sulfur gas, while the blue areas have more glowing oxygen.

I love imaging in narrowband on my 4" Takahashi refractor -- most of the light pollution is cut out by using the narrowband filters, and the stars are pretty nice. I've gotten my narrowband processing routine down so that I don't often have to do a whole lot of color correction to get the colors I want out of these Hubble Palette images -- mainly, I stretch the Ha, OIII, and SII images separately using GeneralisedHyperbolicStretch, and then I combine them post-stretch. I'll run a little SCNR (not totally nuking the green from Ha, but reducing it), and then after extracting the stars, I use ColorMask to work on individual colors. The stars usually come out magenta in Hubble palette images -- a super simple way to fix this is to invert the stars-only image, then run SCNR on the now-green stars (I do like 90%), and then un-invert. Then you get approximations of star color, which is nice -- whites, oranges, yellows, and some blues. Then I add the stars and starless images back together using PixelMath,, just straight adding them.
