Description

M-100 is one of the larger spiral galaxies in the Coma-Virgo galaxy cluster. It lies at a distance of approximately 55 million light years from Earth. Visually, it is about 7.5 arc minutes in diameter, which at this distance makes its actual diameter over 100,000 light years!  In 2006 a 13.7 magnitude supernova erupted in one of its spiral arms. Also visible in this field are the small galaxies NGC-4328 (lower left) NGC-4322 (at 11 o'clock) elliptical galaxy IC-783 (upper right) and the nice edge-on galaxy NGC-4312 (lower right corner).
