Description

Sh2-261 is a large  diffuse cloud of primarily hydrogen located on the border between the Orion and Perseus arms of the Milky Way,  the distance estimated to be 3260 Ly's away .  It is being ionized by runaway star HD 41997 near the center of the image, which appears to be surrounded by a shell of ionized oxygen.  It was discovered by father and son team of astronomers, Harold and Charles Lower in 1939.
