Description

The prominent object in the lower right quadrant of the picture is the Jellyfish Nebula, IC 443. It is a supernova remnant, a rapidly expanding shell of blast debris, the remains of a star that exploded about 30,000 years ago. It's about 5,000 light years away and about 70 light years across.

In the upper left quadrant is Sharpless 249, a large emission nebula. At a distance of about 5,200 light years, it is somewhat further away from us than the Jellyfish Nebula.

For this picture, SII, Ha, and OIII images were combined into an RGB image using an advanced dynamic narrowband combination method. The method used, sometimes referred to as the ForaxX palette, was created by Ludo and is explained in his tutorial, PixInsight : Dynamic narrowband combinations with PixelMath. Ludo is also known as ForaxX.
