Description

It''s GALAXY SEASON!

I set several goals for myself back in galaxy season 2021. I had read in multiple places that my L filter should not be a light pollution filter, just a UV/IR cut filter. This seemed insane to me under my skies in bortle 8, right up against the city of Hamilton Ontario in the Burlington suburbs.

I decided to give it a try, and swapped out the L-Pro in the filter wheel for the UV IR filter. I also had always used a gain of 139 with the ASI1600. I dropped it to a gain of 75, offset of 12 for this session and settled on exposures of 120 seconds. The histogram was off the left side a bit in NINA, but I kept these settings to see what I would end up with. The shorter 5 minute subs were easier on the guiding (I had tried 10 minute subs in the past) and I think less susceptible to seeing issues.

I used identical settings for the RGB filters.

The CEM25 was able to handle the C8 EdgeHD with the 0.7x reducer at 1400mm focal length without an issue. The new WO guidescope paired with the QHY290 gave me an excellent guidescope image scale ratio.

Overall I think this shot came out pretty well. There are a few other thing I want to try this season if weather permits. I will describe them in future images if successful.
